Unbound Book Trailer: Behind the Scenes

Unbound Book Trailer: Behind the Scenes

Wow! It’s a lot of fun being part (more like being in the way) of the filming process.

I wanted to share this experience with you guys and show you a little bit of what’s going on behind the scenes to make this awesome trailer for our Unbound: Origins book release.

Overall, this has been a  huge undertaking. We shot scenes in 5 different locations and had 6 different shooting days, all the while coordinating between 20 different people and a lot of equipment.

To get this done on our meager budget, Byna and I (Joseph) were the ones doing most of the coordinating. Whew! Who knew that so much went into a simple 3 minute trailer, right?

Anyway, the video footage is looking AWESOME, mostly thanks to our friend Jake – the directing genius behind everything.

Shoot 1: The Art of Making Blood

Below is a picture of Byna’s hand covered in homemade blood (a concoction of food dye, cocoa powder, corn syrup, and corn starch).

I had an important role in this whole thing, making blood. At least after Byna had more important things to do and designated me the special effects assistant.

And yes… it took forever to wash off. 🙂

Zombie - Bloody Handprint

Story: “About Last Night”

This next photo does not do the video justice. We shot this in our house with an old shoe that our precious little dog had chewed up. I spent probably 20 minutes attempting to break, then hammer, then saw the heel off… before just giving up. Apparently, it’s not so easy to break a high heel now-a-days.

Oh yeah, our wood-look tile survived. At the time, we were quite worried about staining the grout on our new tile.

Shoot 2: The Mystery of an Unknown Puddle of Blood

Here we are preparing for Colonel Dawson’s scene. The role was played by our friend, who’s an actual Air Force officer (big thank you to Hank!)

Story: “And so it Begins”

For the shot below, we poured out a puddle of homemade blood in the street… which we then proceeded to leave for the neighborhood policeman to find at a later date. 😉

Shoot 3: A Party (… and oh yeah, we need you for this Zombie Trailer too)

How do you fill up a cast for a few back-to-back scenes? A party!

This shoot we actually had at Jake’s house. We knocked out several scenes, including a shot of our mysterious hero who you’ll be acquainted to more in the full length novel, Unbound. Jake looks hardcore with his shotgun in a tree near his house.

The Story: “The Hunt (pt2)”

We were able to knock out the campfire scene at the same time as the above shots. Our friend Steve (guy on the right in the plaid shirt) actually hurt himself cutting wood in the dark. Against all of our advice, he stayed through the shoot before getting his wound taken care of. Thanks Steve! (He ended up being fine… despite cutting his hand with a hatchet!)

Shoot 4: Filming the Terror and Paranoia in a Growing Apocalypse

This shoot proves that grown men still shouldn’t play with gas and matches. I almost caught myself on fire setting the scene for our GRM terrorist attack.

The last two scenes were also fun to shoot. Below we have the interrogation of Antonovich. Our fake handcuffs actually broke a few times during our shoot. By the end they were being held together by spit and duct tape.

The final scene I want to cover is the climax of the trailer. The zombie transformation.

As you can see, the scene looks incredible. We have our zombie who goes through 3 stages of transformation. We bought that cool looking white dress from Goodwill and then got to splatter it with blood and dirt. Finally, we had an aspiring high school make-up artist create our zombie. We went all out for this. Including (drum roll, please)  blood eye drops! It’s sick.

That does it for today’s post. I hope you guys are getting as excited as I am about this trailer!

Keep up the great work! I look forward to seeing more. Quick blood tip, don’t forget to take into account what part of the body the blood is coming from, as the depth of color may be different whether from veins or arteries. Hmmm do zombies prefer oxygenated blood? lol

  13. You guys are terrific being so creative and doing it all on a shoestring budget. Illustrating the true meaning of creative collaboration, keeping it real simple and FUN.
